Dear Dr. Steele,
Vader wanted to say hello as a proud and very healthy , rambunctious stem cell beneficiary. I am so glad that you are expanding this great option for others.

Vader is still running around like crazy, even giving our puppy ( we are CCI puppy raisers now) a run for him money.

I hope you and your family are well. We'd still love to meet up at the tide pools some weekend!

Best,
Christine Gallup & Vader

Hi Cindi, I'm not a veterinarian myself but after consulting with our doctors is sounds like you're most likely out of the woods. It sounds like your quick reaction time helped save your lab from an even worse possible reaction. We've already have a few cases this year, and all our bite victims have had happy endings. Still, it's best to follow up with your veterinarian and proceed with their recommended rechecks. They'll want to make sure that the antibiotics are effective and that your lab eventually resumes to her happy life. One, free of future rattler's, that is!

My yellow lab was bitten by a large rattler on Sat. 8-16-08, she was bitten on the norse and her face swelled while I was trying to get to the car she had to walk 1/2 mile by the time I got to the car she was very slow and drooling and bleeding a lot. I called the vet by the time I got there driving with flashing lights and honking my horn she was gagging, the vet took and gave her steroids,IVLR, clindamycin and pain meds with NSAID. Two days later she came home. Thank God! Her face is still swollen with a necrotic area on her nose. She will cont. antibiotics and pain meds. Do you know if she will have any residule problems like vision or can she still have issues with her clotting or sytemic issues? Thanks, Cindi

Hi Dr. Sophie!

My best friend Jake (a very cool Sheltie) was a patient of Dr. Brad's (and yours, you removed his sutures) in fall of 2005. (He had a growth near a fore leg removed, and a few teeth extracted.) We went in today, mostly for a well dog checkup/annual heart worm test, and also to get a professional opinion regarding some minor issues. He goes back in next week to have his teeth cleaned again, and to remove a small cyst and a couple of skin tags.

We were so disappointed to learn that you and Dr. Brad had left the facility! I wish I had known before hand, I would've made the appointment with RSF instead. (Jake really liked you and your husband. He is an excellent judge of character, so I always defer when he has a preference.) :-)

At this point it's probably most efficient for us to follow through with what we have scheduled with the other vet (in absence of a compelling reason to do otherwise) but next time he needs to be seen, we'll give you a call.

In any case, congrats on your new position, and thanks for the interesting blog (it and google made you easy to find again.)

-Mark McGinty

btw, there is a fond reference to Dr. Brad on Jake's web site (www.jakethedoggy.com, on the coyote page) if you have a minute to kill, take a look. :-)
