Whether or not your pet is a youngster or a geriatric patient (or somewhere in between), veterinary wellness exams play an important role in the maintenance of your pet’s health, and are recommended for all species of pets during all stages of life.

Preventive health care is integrally tied to both the longevity and quality of your pet’s life. Wellness exams allow the doctor to examine your pet from nose to tail, identifying potential hidden problems before they have time to develop and assessing the maintenance of various chronic health conditions. The doctor’s primary goal is to ensure that your pet is given the opportunity to achieve an optimal state of health.

During most wellness exams, a nurse will assess if your pet is due for any vaccinations, and the doctor will discuss with you if it is ideal for your pet to stay up-to-date on these vaccines.

In addition, our veterinary staff will make sure that your pet receives any medication or supplements that may be needed for treatment. Please keep in mind that the state of California requires that pets be examined by their veterinarian at least annually in order to fill any medications. Our veterinarians recommend that monthly heartworm prevention and flea and teck prevention be filled during your pet’s wellness exam.

Our veterinarians recommend that older pets, pets with chronic health problems, and pets taking chronic medications have a bi-annual examination and appropriate lab testing. These samples can be obtained during your appointment. We also request that all patients, no matter their age, submit a fecal sample annually to test for any parasites that may have been contracted in the past year.

Your pet’s wellness exam is also a time to discuss any concerns you may have about your pet’s health or behavior. The doctor may refer you to a specialist, if needed. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions that you may have, as we aim to help you to feel confident and informed by the time you and your pet leave our office.
